For any of my frequent readers, I apologize for not writing anything through the break (minus my movie experience post.). I'm back at work, and full of Vim and Vinegar!
Something tells me that I didn't get that saying right...
I have recently been actually watching the Super Bowl Playoffs. For those who don't know, the Super Bowl is a sporting championship for the NFL (National Football League). If you do, then I'm sorry for making you feel like a child.
Anyway, unlike most years, I am actually interested in the outcome this year. The teams who participated in the playoffs so far have not been your usual teams (Detroit for one actually made the playoffs: who'd guess?), so it's been very interesting to me.
So, let's just take a look at who made the playoffs:
AFC Conference:
NFC Conference:
From this, 4 teams remain: New England and Baltimore (AFC), and New York and San Francisco (NFC). The two teams from the same conferences are going to play against each other, deciding the Super Bowl contestants.
Who do you think is going to make it to the Super Bowl?
What? Y-you want my opinion? Ok, fine...
I believe this year is going to be a rematch from a few years ago: New England vs. New York.
Why is that?
My favourite team is the Baltimore Ravens. At first, when I was 8, I liked their team logo. It was cool, it was purple and black, and it's a freakin' cool looking bird. What more could you ask for?
At the time, I never knew they won the Super Bowl.
A few years later, I began to appreciate the players on the team around 2004. Ray Lewis soon became one of my favourite players for his awesome skill and his love for his team. I also liked such other players like Peter Boulware, Chris McAllister, Terell Suggs, Ed Reed and Todd Heap. However, despite them being "my team", I've always found them to be the underdogs: They've never really had a strong offense.
A few years ago, they drafted Joe Flacco, who ever since then, has become another of my favourite players. He's not the best quarterback, but he gets the job done. Unlike many other players in the league, he doesn't act arrogant or like an asshole, but has a backbone. I really like him as a person, and his prowess as a player is perfect for his team. I'd be depressed if he moved.
However, Baltimore is not a "giant-slayer" kind of team (they aren't great against good teams, but do well against weaker teams). Their defense is by far their best feature (ranked 3rd for total yards defensively) while their offense is only average (Total yards is ranked 12th). New England, however, is not only first in total yards defensively, but third in total yards offensively (check the rest of the stats here). Not only that, but Ed Reed, one of the leagues best Safety's, might not play that day.
"Ok" says you, "New England is a Super Bowl-winning team. But what about San Francisco?"
San Francisco... I can't explain it, but they won't win. I don't want to make fun of their fans or anything, but they just won't win. I don't follow them enough, but... despite their successful season, there is a force that they can't control which will defeat them.
I'd like to call it, "Eli Manning".
Remember a few years ago, New England versus New York? New England won every game of the year, while New York struggled to the Super Bowl. However, who won?
Eli Manning is a great player. He is. However, he gets overshadowed by most big names such as Aaron Rogers and Tom Brady and (obviously) Payton Manning, his older brother. Why that happens is because during the regular season, he actually plays pretty mediocre. As you saw this year, their record is 9-7. But when it comes to the Playoffs, Eli gets his Manning blood pumping, and he plays amazingly well.
So, that's my prediction. Who really will make it? Comment on it!
Thanks for your time!
